About the Founder: I grew up in an alcoholic family. I experienced the impact of the disease firsthand. Despite this, I went on to using. In my senior year of high school, I entered a treatment program. My experience was so profound that I realized I wanted to be a counselor. I felt drawn to the notion of helping people enter recovery. Some might say “called”. After a period of recovery, a relapse occurred. This period “research” led to a “pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization” that facilitated reentering recovery.
In recovery, the idea of becoming a counselor, again, came to mind. I saw that it was something I really still felt compelled to do. I enrolled in The College of St Catherines where I saw, what I thought, was the best education available for doing this. During college, it became even more apparent.
After college, I worked at a nationally known treatment program in Minnesota. During my tenure there, I was recruited to come work at a program in Montana and I jumped at the chance. At this program (which was a rather unconventional program) I excelled.
During my 20+ years there, I was able to begin doing outreach, I was put in a director role, I started supervising others all while being able to continue the practice of counseling. It provided me with the ability to build a reputation of professionalism and integrity. It provided me with a forum to lecture and train on a national level and at national conferences.
Since that time, I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to start two programs. This allowed me to see the power of creating culture. A team culture and a culture of recovery. This is what I’m excited to have at Unity House.
Overall, I’m excited to bring my 34 years of recovery and 30+ years as a clinician to provide the next step in the recovery process for men.
Sincerely,
Patrick Hawkins.
